Workshop 3: Cryo-Electron Tomography: State of the Art Methods

Date/Time: Friday, July 29, 2022 @ 9:30 AM PT
Portland Marriott Downtown, Portland, Oregon
Organizational Contact: JT Kaelber

This workshop will step through each stage of the cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) workflow and feature instructors who have developed novel methodologies that participating structural biologists could implement at their home institutions. Cryo-ET is still emerging as a technique, with a ten-fold increase from 2009 to 2019 in annual publications depositing one or more structures in the field repository. This workshop will help attendees accelerate their research by exposure to state-of-the-art methods. It features talks on advances in specimen preparation, data acquisition, computational processing, and national infrastructure as well as a round-table discussion on ion beam micromachining and discussion groups. Joint activities with a sister workshop on single-particle cryo-EM (organizer: Dr. Michael Cianfrocco) will build up the cryo-EM SIG community and foster intellectual interchange. Participants will learn about new methods for high-throughput + high-quality tomogram acquisition, in situ methods, and more.
